Crunchyroll vs HiDive subs - one of them is totally lazy
Rewatched Made in Abyss on HiDive last month after seeing it on Crunchyroll first. Crunchyroll actually translated the little notes and signs in the background. HiDive just ignored them. That worldbuilding detail matters when a show uses visual text as lore. Anyone else notice this stuff or am I just picky?

Made in Abyss is actually the perfect show to notice this on lol. Crunchyroll had all those cave raider notes and Riko's journal entries translated which matters when the story literally relies on you reading them. HiDive just left them as Japanese text like everyone can read kanji or something. I usually go with whichever service has better subtitle work per show since they both have hits and misses. For stuff like Konosuba or Slime I'll check both first week and stick with whoever bothers to localize the on-screen text.

Remember when HiDive first got Re:Zero and they left all those witch cult symbols untranslated for like 6 episodes? Missed a ton of foreshadowing on the first watch that way. Always check who's handling the tricky shows first before settling in long term.

Actually that reminds me of watching Haikyuu on two different services and one of them translated the team banner mottos and the other just left them in Japanese. Like the whole "fly" motto for Karasuno is a huge part of their identity. Missed that connection entirely on my first watch.
