Ran 400 feet of Cat6 through a 1950s Cape Cod in Salem, and found a trick with a shop vac and a plastic bag
Two months back I was wiring a 3,000 square foot house in Salem where every wall had old knob and tube insulation packed tight, and my fish tape kept snagging at the same corner behind the kitchen. I taped a plastic grocery bag to the end of some mason line, tied it to the fish tape, and sucked it through the cavity with my shop vac from the basement, and it slid past that corner in about 4 seconds flat. Does anyone else keep a small vac on the van just for pulling wire through finished walls, or do you have a better trick for those nightmare corners?
Buddy of mine had the same mess in an old house over in Peabody, and instead of a bag he used one of those foam ear plugs tied to his pull string. Said the vac grabbed it way better than the bag did since it would actually seal up against the pipe, and it popped out the other end in like two seconds. He keeps one of those little 2 gallon shop vacs strapped in the van now for exactly this. Cheap trick but it beats fighting a fish tape for an hour.
