After my recent shed frame, I'm convinced over-cleaning welds hurts more than helps
I spent way too long grinding every weld on that steel frame until it looked perfect. A small crack showed up right where I ground the bead too thin, which was a real wake-up call. Now I just fix the messy spots and let the solid welds be, saving a ton of time. Honestly, sometimes a rough weld that holds is better than a pretty one that fails.

Why grind it perfect if it holds as is?

Tbh, when you say "if it holds as is", that misses the point for me. A clean weld lets you actually see if it was done right in the first place. You can spot a bad one before it cracks.

Exactly, being able to see if it was done right is the whole thing. It lets you spot problems early.

But how often does that really matter for the average home project? Most stuff isn't going to see crazy stress where a tiny weak spot matters. Sure, if you're building a roll cage, grind and inspect everything. For a garden cart or a workbench leg, chasing perfection seems like a solution looking for a problem. Are we all just over-engineering things for no good reason?
