My kids won't stop fighting over which aliens to keep as pets

We watch a lot of sci-fi shows, and my kids have strong views on alien pets. This leads to loud fights about how hard it would be to take care of them. Any advice on keeping these talks calm and fun?

Wait, they're actually debating the care requirements? Like what to feed a Horta or how to walk a tribble? That's somehow weirder than just wanting one.

Honestly I would have said the same thing as @martin.joel a week ago! I used to think these debates were just silly kid stuff. But hearing them argue about food and habitat means they're thinking it through seriously, not just wanting a cool pet. That's a good sign they're learning. Maybe lean into it and have them each make a "care guide" for their favorite alien. Turns the fight into a project.

Admit I would've just stared blankly if a kid asked me to walk a tribble. My big thought would've been "cool space pet" and then I'd forget to feed it. Guess that's why the kids are doing the project and I'm not.
