The $150 course told me to skip the fancy tool, I should have paid attention

Last summer I signed up for a local workshop on selling handmade jewelry online, the guy running it kept saying stop wasting time on expensive photo editing software and just use your phone camera with natural light. I ignored him completely because I thought my DSLR shots with the softbox setup were way more professional looking. Six months later I checked my shop stats and 8 out of 10 sales came from photos I took at my kitchen table by the window with post-it notes holding the earrings up. The fancy shots barely got any views and honestly made my pieces look too stiff. That advice was sitting right there but I wanted to feel like I was doing something extra instead of something simple. Has anyone else paid good money for guidance that you only understood after losing weeks of effort?
