Old mill tour in Vermont made me question the whole 'downsize to a small town' plan
Walked through a 1920s wool mill that's now condos and a co-op last month, and every retiree I met there looked more lonely than the ones in my Chicago suburb, so is the fresh start really about the place or just dodging your current problems for $400k less?
Wondering if one mill tour in Vermont really tells you anything about small town life in general. You met some lonely retirees in a converted wool mill, so what? I could walk into any condo building in Chicago and find the same thing. The people who move somewhere for a "fresh start" are usually the ones who never learned how to build a life wherever they were, so they just drag the same problems to a new zip code. But does that mean nobody should ever move? No, it just means the place was never the actual fix in the first place.
