Stopped by that new home showroom on 82 Ave and came away with a different take than most

I visited the Home Design Centre last Saturday and everyone seems to love the open shelf kitchen displays they have. But I gotta say, I think open shelves are a terrible idea for anyone who actually cooks more than once a week. All that dust and grease from frying will settle on your dishes, and you'll be washing everything before you use it. Plus the realtor I talked to said they hurt resale value because buyers see them as impractical. Has anyone else found open shelves to be more trouble than they're worth?

Hate to gently correct but open shelves in a house from the 2010s actually don't hurt resale value in my experience as much as people think. I know a few flippers who put them in and homes sold just fine, especially in the newer builds where buyers expect that look. The dust thing is real though, I have a buddy with open shelves and he says he just runs plates through a quick rinse before using them, it's not that bad unless you're deep frying every night.

Also great if you want your cat to have a perch to knock stuff off of.

@ruby_jones Totally. It's like we traded cabinet doors for dust rags and called it a trend.
