Spotting fossil details in my shale sample felt like a mini victory
In my experience, shale can look pretty plain, so I usually just pass it by. But yesterday, I took a closer look at a piece from my rock pile with a hand lens. To my surprise, I saw clear imprints of what look like small brachiopods. It wasn't a big deal, but it made me happy to finally notice something cool. That moment of seeing the details was really satisfying, you know? Has anyone else had a small win like this with a common rock? Your mileage may vary, but for me, it's these little finds that keep geology fun.

Call that a win? Shale's always dull.

My friend Lily brought a boring shale piece back from her Colorado trip.

Honestly I used to be right there with the people saying shale is just boring gray layers. I'd walk right past it looking for flashier stuff. But last fall I was splitting some flat pieces apart, almost just to kill time, and a perfect little fern print showed up on the fresh surface. It wasn't huge or museum quality, but it was mine, you know? That totally flipped a switch for me. Now I give the plain stuff a second look every time, because you never know. That quiet satisfaction of spotting a detail everyone else misses is the best feeling.

Seriously, same exact thing happened to me. Was about to toss a plain mudstone slab last summer. Gave it one more whack with the hammer. Revealed this perfect, small clam shell imprint. Nothing crazy. But finding it myself felt awesome. Totally flipped how I hunt now. The plain gray rocks often hide the best finds.
