Found a use for all that extra post-hole concrete

I mold it into small slabs for walkways, so nothing goes to waste.

Speaking of putting slabs flat on the ground, my friend Dave did that for a little patio area. He just set them right on the dirt, no gravel, no gaps. After a good rain, you could see mud oozing up between every single slab. It was a slick, muddy mess every time it got wet, and the slabs started rocking when you stepped on them.

Consider the drainage under those walkway slabs. If you put them flat on the ground, water can pool and cause problems. Leave little spaces between each slab so rain can soak in. It stops the soil from washing away and keeps everything level.

My gravel base with half-inch gaps... stopped all pooling last spring.

Ever see what happens when someone ignores that gap advice? My buddy did his whole patio with slabs tight together, looked slick for about a month. Then we got a solid week of rain and it turned into a giant, muddy puddle. He had to pull up every other slab the next summer to add those spaces, total pain. Your gravel base with gaps is definitely the way to go.
