My take on quarter cracks: Less is more when it comes to patching.
Most farriers go heavy with patches and pads, but I've had BETTER luck with just cleaning and balancing the hoof. Learned this after a horse kept re-injuring itself with too much hardware.

Exactly! I've seen that a light patch often helps the hoof heal on its own. Adding too much can mess up the hoof's balance and lead to more problems. Sticking to clean trim work has kept my own horse sound for years.

My gelding's quarter crack closed up in six weeks with just a light acrylic patch and a balanced trim. The farrier before me had a full shoe and pad on it for months with no progress.

Our old jumper had the same issue. Went through three farriers who kept adding pads before we tried just a light patch and correct trimming. Horse stayed sound for two full seasons after that.

Sometimes I think we treat hooves like a bad pizza, just piling on toppings hoping it fixes the crust. A light patch is like just a little cheese, it lets the actual hoof do its job without throwing everything off balance. Guess the lesson is more hardware doesn't mean more healing.
