Unpopular opinion: I don't think you should always return a lost wallet you find

Honestly, last Tuesday I found a wallet on the ground in the Kroger parking lot with about $80 cash in it and no ID. I know everyone says to turn it in, but I saw the guy drop it. He was getting into a really beat-up car with a flat tire. I just walked over and handed it back to him directly. He looked so relieved. Ngl, if I'd turned it into the store, they might have just kept it, and he needed that money more than their lost and found drawer did. Has anyone else ever just given something back to the person instead of following the official 'rule'?

Actually, returning it directly to the person IS the right thing to do. The "unpopular opinion" is about keeping it.

Totally get that. If you see the person drop it, just hand it back. The official lost and found is a black hole. I found a phone once, saw the owner a few feet away looking panicked, and gave it right to them. Saved them hours of stress. Stores don't try that hard to find people, they just toss stuff in a box.

But isn't that just... returning it?
