Our street's new alert system changed my opinion on digital vigilance
I was all for the neighborhood watch app when it started. It seemed smart to share alerts about odd things happening. Then a neighbor posted about a teen walking his dog late, calling it suspicious. The teen was just checking on a sick pet. That moment showed me how these tools can create mistrust. We're labeling normal behavior as threats too fast. I now think we need rules for what gets shared, or we'll split the community.

Seriously? Someone thought a kid walking his dog late was a threat? That's just someone taking care of their pet. I've seen stuff like this where people report neighbors for watering plants at night or having guests over. It turns us into a bunch of nosy watchdogs instead of a friendly street. How do we stop this from making everyone paranoid?

Look, I get what you're saying about not wanting a paranoid street. But sometimes there's a real reason people call things in. My cousin's neighborhood had a bunch of break-ins that started with someone "just walking a dog" really late to case houses. It's a tough balance, because being friendly is good, but keeping an eye out isn't always about being nosy. I'd rather have a neighbor report something weird that turns out to be nothing, than ignore something that turns out to be bad.

Wait, watering plants at night? What's suspicious about that, it's just gardening. This stuff really has gotten out of hand.
