I used to think my smart home was just cool, not creepy

I was setting up a new voice assistant for my grandma in Phoenix and heard it record a full 30-second chat about her medicine. The light wasn't on. That tipped me off that my own house was probably listening way more than I knew. How do you draw the line between helpful tech and a hidden microphone?

Wait, doesn't that recording light mean it's supposed to be listening? I used to think the privacy stuff was overblown, but hearing that about your grandma is a real wake up call. If it can grab a full conversation without any sign, then the line is totally gone. Helpful tech shouldn't feel like a secret spy. Now I'm wondering what mine have picked up when I thought they were off.

Yeah I was the same way, always figured the light was a clear sign it was active. But hearing how these things can catch whole conversations in the background, even during a normal request, that flipped a switch for me. It's not about the helpful features anymore, it's about not knowing where the line is. Once you lose that trust, you can't really get it back. I just don't want to feel like I'm being studied in my own home.

Right there with you @the_iris, that exact fear made me unplug my smart speaker for good. I moved it to a room where we never talk about private stuff, just music and timers. The light can be misleading, and that's the scary part. Now I use a dumb Bluetooth speaker instead for daily stuff. It's a hassle but worth the peace of mind knowing it's not always on.
