Unpopular take: that safety meeting in Denver last month was overkill

Everyone raved about the new lockout procedure they demoed, but I've been running the same old system for 12 years with zero incidents. They spent 45 minutes on a scenario that happens maybe once in a career. Has anyone else found these 'mandatory updates' more about ticking boxes than actual floor work?

@wade871 hit the nail on the head. That sticker color thing is a perfect example. It reminds me of how my homeowners association keeps sending out newsletters about what shade of white our front doors can be. Nobody's complained, nobody's painted theirs pink, but they spent three meetings on it. It's like these safety guys get paid by the hour, same as the HOA board, and they need something to show for their time. So they invent problems nobody had to justify their jobs.

And honestly, maybe the real issue isn't even about safety at all. Maybe it's about control. Like, changing the sticker color forces everyone to acknowledge the guy who came up with it has some authority. Nobody's gonna argue about a sticker, right? But by making everyone switch, they're basically saying "I matter, do what I say." I've seen this same thing in local government meetings where they'll push through some tiny rule change just to remind people they're in charge. It's a power move disguised as a policy update. Makes you wonder how many of these "improvements" are really just about someone wanting to leave their mark.

That "power move disguised as a policy update" line really hit home. I've been on the PTA for my local school for years, and we had a similar thing happen with the sign-in sheets for volunteers. Someone spent two months designing a new form with different colored boxes and a spot for a serial number nobody understood. The old one worked fine for ten years. But we spent three meetings debating it because the person in charge wanted to leave their mark before their term ended. It's not about the stickers or the forms. It's about needing to feel like you've done something important, even if nobody else sees the point.

Three hours of my life I'll never get back. My crew has been using the same lockout tags for eight years and we've never had a close call, but now I gotta sit through some slide show about a new sticker color. Who actually asked for this change?
