Got into a surprisingly detailed chat about GFCI outlets at my niece's birthday party

The other parents looked horrified when I started explaining how GFCI outlets prevent electrocution in wet areas, but my brother-in-law was oddly fascinated, lol.

Yeah, that bit about kitchen outlets on their own circuit is so true. Found the trick is to scan the room for the one person whose eyes light up. At a holiday thing, my uncle overheard me mention GFCIs and actually asked follow up questions. Everyone else tuned out, but we had a solid ten minute chat about bathroom codes. Just gotta find your one weird listener.

Have you ever found yourself deep in a niche technical talk when you were supposed to be socializing? I totally get that, because I once derailed a dinner party by explaining why kitchen outlets need to be on their own circuit. My friend's dad was nodding along while everyone else just stared at their wine glasses, lol. @parker_anderson, your barbecue anecdote really hits home, since it's always the burned food that signals we've gone too far. Those weird tangents somehow make gatherings more memorable, even if they confuse most of the guests.

At a wedding reception, I once cornered a cousin to discuss the thermodynamic inefficiencies of buffet warmers. She politely excused herself to 'check on the cake,' but I saw her joining a group across the room. My own mother later asked if I could please stick to small talk about the weather. I guess my passion for heat transfer doesn't translate well to dance floors.

Man, your story takes me back to a backyard barbecue where I mentioned ground fault protection on pool pumps... my friend's wife suddenly recalled her uncle getting a nasty shock from an old patio light. We ended up debating outdoor wiring codes while burgers burned on the grill... half the group drifted away to check their phone screens. It's those random deep dives that actually stick with people, you know? Even if the setting is totally wrong for it...
