That paint return at Home Depot felt like pulling teeth
I drove 45 minutes to Home Depot in Bakersfield last Saturday to return a gallon of Behr paint I bought by mistake, wrong color completely. The guy at the desk gave me this whole speech about how they can't take it back if it's been tinted, even though the receipt was from that same week and it was clearly their mistake ringing it up. Has anyone else had to fight a return that should have been cut and dry?

Used to roll my eyes at people complaining about returns, but after reading this thread I'm starting to see both sides. @markh85 brought up a solid point about the custom cake thing - once you sign off on that color match and they start mixing, it's a done deal. Still feels like they could be more flexible when the store employee is the one who grabbed the wrong can. The policy protects them from people changing their minds, but it leaves no room for when they mess up. Guess I just assumed big box stores had more leeway than they actually do.

I worked returns at a Lowe's in Fresno for two years and honestly Home Depot was right in this case. The return policy clearly says once paint is tinted they can't resell it and you signed off on the color match before they mixed it. I got screamed at weekly by people who picked up the wrong can from the shelf or changed their mind after the fact. It's the same as buying a custom cake and then trying to return it because you don't like the frosting color. Did you actually watch them scan the wrong color code or did you just grab the wrong one yourself?

That 2 years in Fresno probably saw a lot of returns but paint is different from a custom cake since the customer didn't come up with the color @markh85... you guys matched it from a sample they brought in. If the store picked the wrong can off the shelf or typed in the wrong code, that's their mistake, not the buyer's fault. Home Depot should eat the cost of a mis-tint instead of leaving a customer stuck with paint they never asked for.
