Unpopular opinion: Building permits for minor DIY jobs are more about revenue than safety.
I get that permits keep things up to code, but for a simple shed or fence, it feels like a cash grab. On the flip side, skipping them can lead to bigger issues down the road. Where do you stand on this?

That story about the inspector and your garden hits home. I had a similar experience putting up a perimeter fence. In my case, I called the planning department first and just asked a ton of questions about height limits and setback rules. The guy was really helpful, and it turned out my plan was straightforward enough that he suggested I just submit a simple sketch. The permit fee was annoying, honestly, but having that paper meant my neighbor couldn't complain later. Your mileage may vary, but for me, a preliminary call to feel out the process worked. It felt less like a blind cash grab and more like buying some insurance against future headaches.

Built a shed last summer and the inspector spent more time chatting about my garden than checking the structure. Made me wonder what we're really paying for.
