Swapped my 3/4 inch plywood subfloor for 5/8 inch tongue and groove OSB and saved $180 on my basement reno

The OSB squeaks way less and lays flatter than the plywood did on my last project, so has anyone else noticed a big difference between the two for subflooring?

Honestly, I gotta call something out here - you said the OSB "lays flatter than the plywood" from your last project, but that's probably more about the specific batches than the materials themselves. I've installed tons of subflooring and both can come warped or cupped if they weren't stored right. Tbh, the real reason OSB often feels flatter is because it's way more consistent factory-to-factory than plywood these days. Ngl though, the squeak thing is real - OSB grips nails and screws better so there's less movement over time. Still, $180 saved is $180 saved, so good on you for going with the cheaper option.

Is it just me or does this fit right in with how most things are made now? It seems like companies have dialed in the OSB process way better than plywood, so you get a more consistent product every time. The squeak thing is a real bonus too, because nothing drives me crazier than a floor that talks back to you when you walk across it. I've noticed the same pattern in other building materials too, like how drywall seems to be more uniform now than it was ten years ago. So yeah, saving $180 and getting a better result sounds like a win to me.

My buddy saved like $200 on his last build doing the same thing.
