My bathroom shelf project turned into a full wall demo last month

I went to replace a wobbly bracket and found the entire stud behind the drywall was soft and rotten. Has anyone else had a simple fix uncover a much bigger problem?

Overreacting? Maybe. But have you seen the actual numbers they're throwing around? It's not just a small change, it's a whole new fee structure. They're basically charging for things that were free last month.

Had the same thing happen with a leaky window frame. Ended up replacing a whole section of exterior sheathing and siding. A moisture meter from the hardware store helped me find the full extent of the damage before I started cutting.
