The gallery site crushed my file quality and I only noticed after the show

Uploaded 14 pieces to that online showcase last month, thought I was being smart using their compress tool to speed things up. Walked past my own print at the physical event and the pixels were mush, like a bad JPEG from 2009. Turns out the site was shrinking everything to 72 DPI on the side, no warning, no option to keep originals. I redid six smaller pieces from scratch in 2 days, but the big canvas is done for. Anyone else get burned by a platform's silent file mangling and have a workaround for next time?

The site was shrinking everything to 72 DPI" is the key part, but DPI doesn't actually matter for digital files, only for print scaling. That's just a number in the file header, so your actual problem was the compression killing the pixels, not the DPI itself.
