Showcasing my wacom piece vs. tablet sketch, the gallery picked the rough one
Last month I put two versions of the same dragon portrait into a local digital showcase in Austin, one was fully polished with lighting and textures, the other was just a messy 40-minute sketch with visible construction lines. The judges picked the sketch and wrote that it had more life, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has had a raw piece beat their finished work at a show and what that says about how we present art.

40 minutes versus probably 10 plus hours and the judges went with the 40 minute one, that is brutal but also kind of funny in a painful way. My best guess is that the messy version keeps the energy of the first idea, and polished layers can smooth all that out until the dragon looks like it is posing for a driver's license photo. I once spent a week on a poster for a friend's show and she hung the 5 minute doodle I did on a napkin instead, so at least we are suffering together.
