Overheard a framer say white mattes do 80% of the work

I was at a gallery opening in Portland last Thursday and two guys were talking behind me about a show they'd hung. One said the white matte is what makes the colors pop, not the art itself, and it got me thinking about how much presentation matters in my own portfolio. I spent like 6 hours last week rearranging a piece I was proud of, but maybe I should have just switched the mount. Has anyone else found that simple framing choices change how people react to your work?

Take it from someone who hangs drywall for a living, the frame is basically the makeup for your art. Nobody notices the studs behind the wall, but everyone sure notices when the paint job looks off. So yeah, swap that matte before you rehang the piece, it's cheaper than therapy.
