Just realized my granddad's advice about fixing things first was right all along

He told me to always take 15 minutes to read the manual before touching anything, but I used to just dive in and make it worse. Last weekend I spent 3 hours trying to patch a drywall hole in my kitchen before I finally stopped and looked up the proper technique on YouTube, and it took me 30 minutes after that. Has anyone else ignored good advice from an older relative and regretted it later?

@joel_clark37 right? using the wrong tools is like wrestling a bear with a feather duster.

Oh man, this hits close to home. I totally ignored my uncle's advice about not using too much water when mixing joint compound for drywall, and I ended up with this soupy mess that took forever to dry and kept cracking. But here's what I'm wondering though - did your granddad specifically mention something about the tools you need before you start? Because that was the part I always skipped, thinking I could just use whatever was lying around, and it always made things worse.

Wait, you used random tools instead of the right ones? That's wild.
