Rant: my side gig turned into my main gig and now I miss the cubicle

Three years ago I was fixing spreadsheets for a logistics firm in Dayton, 40 hours a week, bored out of my mind. Last month I quit to do furniture restoration full time because a buddy kept throwing me work. Now I'm sanding a 1920s dresser at 11pm for a client who haggled me down to $150, and I actually miss clocking out. Don't get me wrong, I love the smell of linseed oil, but the pressure to find the next job never stops. My hands hurt, my back aches, and I had to buy a $400 sander last Tuesday that I'll use maybe twice a month. Has anyone else jumped ship from a steady paycheck and felt weirdly nostalgic for the boring stuff, like the office microwave or the fire drills?

That $400 sander sounds like my $600 commercial mixer I bought for a cake side gig that lasted six weeks. Now it just sits on my counter judging me while I order takeout. I still catch myself missing the office thermostat wars and pretending to care about Janet’s vacation photos. At least nobody haggles you down when you’re refilling the copier.
