Barista figured out my night shift fog before I did

Stopped at the same coffee spot on my way home from the hospital last Tuesday, and the barista goes "you look like you're running on fumes but you keep ordering the same thing." She was right, I'd been joking about my sleep schedule for weeks but never actually said what it felt like out loud. Talking about it made me realize I spend 40 hours a week taking care of other people's sleep but never once thought about protecting my own. Now I'm trying to block out 2 hours after my shift to just decompress, no phone, no TV, just silence. Anyone else find that naming the thing to a stranger makes it way more real than telling your own friends?

That stranger distance helps. Told my neighbor about my sleep issues once, someone I barely knew, and it hit way harder than complaining to my sister. She just said "so fix it" and I actually heard it. Started doing the same decompress thing but I walk instead of sitting still. Twenty minutes around the block, no music, just the sound of my own footsteps. The silence trick works if you can stick with it.
