Warning: threw out my old denim jacket after a stranger at the laundromat pointed out the smell

So I'm at the Suds & Spin on 8th Ave yesterday waiting for my washer cycle and this older lady next to me says "hon, that jacket's been in a flood" and I was like what? She said it had that damp basement smell and I'd been wearing it for like 3 months without noticing. I took it home and smelled the collar and she was totally right. It was my dad's jacket from the 80s too. Has anyone else had someone point out something obvious about your clothes that you completely missed for way too long?

My cousin had the same thing happen with a leather belt he never took off... someone at a party said it smelled like wet dog and he'd been wearing it for like a year. He was so embarrassed he threw it in the dumpster right there.

@rowan_thomas84 got it right, a dumpster is the only cure for that kind of smell.
