The farmer's market guy made me rethink my whole banana habit
I used to grab bananas without thinking, any bunch that looked green enough to last the week. Last Saturday at the farmers market in Salem, this older grower saw me pawing through his display and just said, 'You know those are picked 3 weeks before they ever hit your kitchen, right?' He showed me the difference between a banana that was cut too early versus one that ripened on the tree longer. The early ones taste starchy and never get that real sweetness, no matter how many brown spots show up. Now I actually ask the produce folks when their shipment landed, and I'm buying smaller, riper bunches twice a week instead of hoarding. Has anyone else discovered something basic they've been doing backwards for years because some stranger called it out?

Bananas are the biggest scam in produce and nobody talks about it. Those starchy early picks are why half the fruit in my house ends up in the trash. Now I just sniff the stems and grab the ones that actually smell like banana. Fooled for thirty years.
