Why does no one mention the hidden fees on event registration sites?

Signed up for a 5k race last month, thought the fee was 45 bucks. At checkout it jumped to 62 with a "processing" charge and some insurance add-on they auto-checked. I didn't catch it until after paying, and their refund policy is basically a brick wall. Anyone else get dinged by those surprise extras on ticket or signup pages?

and the worst part is they hide it behind those tiny checkboxes in a gray font, like they know you're gonna miss it. I've started taking a screenshot of the final total before I even enter my card info, then I go back and uncheck every optional box they snuck in. it's basically a scam but they get away with it cause nobody wants to deal with the hassle of disputing it over 12 bucks.
