My garage door opener died at 6:40 this morning with my car stuck inside
I was already running late for a dentist appointment in Clifton when I hit the button and got nothing but a sad click. I climbed up on a milk crate, pulled the emergency cord, and muscled the door up by hand while my neighbor Barb watched from her driveway with her dog. Got the car out, made it to the appointment 12 minutes late, and then spent 40 minutes on hold with a repair place that quoted me $310 just to come look at it. I ended up watching a 9 minute video and finding a stripped gear in the motor housing, and a $14 replacement part is on the way. Barb came over later and said she thought I was 'having a whole situation' out there. Has anyone swapped one of these gears before, and did it actually hold up or did the whole unit go a couple months later?
Barb watching from her driveway with the dog is sending me, she was def getting the whole show. That 6:40am click of death is the worst sound ever, sorry you had to do the milk crate thing before a dentist appointment of all things. $310 just to look at it is insane when the actual part is $14, good on you for finding that video. I swapped the drive gear on my LiftMaster two winters ago and it's still going, the key is greasing the new gear and the rail good before you close it back up. One thing to check while you have it open is the chain tension and whether the gear wore down because the door is binding somewhere. If the door moves smooth by hand once it's disconnected, the gear alone should hold you fine.
