Fixed my leaky toilet with a cheap wax ring swap
My bathroom smelled like rotten eggs for 2 weeks and I kept buying those drop-in tablets to mask it. Finally took apart the toilet and saw the old wax ring was cracked on one side. Spent $5 on a new one at Home Depot and tightened the bolts. No more smell and no calling a plumber for $200. Anyone else deal with a simple fix that saved you a ton?

Gotta disagree though. Wax rings are a temporary fix at best. Spend the extra $10 on a rubber one and you won't have to touch it again for decades.

Yeah I had basically the same thing happen last year. My toilet wasn't smelling but it was wobbling and I just thought the floor was uneven. Turned out the wax ring had squished flat over time and was barely sealing. I was ready to call a plumber but my neighbor came over and showed me how to swap it in like 20 minutes. Cost me like $6 and a trip to the hardware store. Felt like an idiot for almost spending all that money on something so simple. The rubber ring thing is fine but wax has been working for decades and it's cheap. If it ain't broke don't fix it right.

Bro going from rotten egg smell to fresh bathroom for $5 is basically a flex. Rubber rings are cool and all but my grandpa fixed toilets with wax for 50 years and they never failed him. Maybe your bolts were loose or something lol. Still though paying a plumber $200 just to swap a ring is criminal when youtube exists. You basically saved yourself a pizza party with that fix. Props for not being one of those people who calls a pro for everything.
