Just saw that 60% of public WiFi networks in my city aren't even encrypted

I was looking up reviews for that coffee shop downtown and stumbled on a study from some security firm. They tested 500 hotspots across downtown Houston and 60% of them had no encryption at all. That means anyone sitting nearby could see your traffic. I used to hop on any free WiFi without thinking twice. Has anyone else checked what networks they use on a regular basis?
