My 620 credit score finally made sense after 8 years of stupid mistakes

I thought paying the minimum on everything was totally fine until I actually looked at my interest rates last March. My Amazon card was hitting me with 28% and I had been carrying $4,200 on it for like two years. The real wake up call came when a lender denied me for a small car loan and showed the negative marks for utilization above 90% on three cards. I always blamed late payments for my score but it was the balances that were killing me the whole time. Now I am attacking the smallest balance first even though it means less free cash each month. Has anyone else overlooked utilization while obsessing over payment history? How did you decide which card to nuke first?
