Watched a guy's freelance portfolio go from crickets to 9 inquiries a week after he cut it from 14 projects to 3
He dropped all his logo and branding filler 6 months ago in Austin and just kept the 3 food packaging jobs he actually liked, and now clients in that niche refer him constantly, so how do you figure out which work to keep when all of it feels important?
Tried doing this exact thing last year and ended up keeping 11 projects because I convinced myself every single one was "part of my range" so yeah, I am not the person to ask for advice here. In my experience the stuff you actually like tends to be the stuff you did the best work on, not the stuff that pays the most or impresses other designers at happy hour. The Austin guy probably just looked at which projects got him the clients he wanted and threw out the rest, even the ones that felt important at the time. Your mileage may vary though, since I still have a logo for a dog bakery in my portfolio that nobody has asked about in two years. Maybe try cutting to five first and see if the world ends, because for me it did not, I just felt weird for a week.
