The unpaid intern's portfolio beat my 12 years of client work
Last month at a Denver portfolio review, a kid fresh out of school showed me a fake brand campaign he built for a fictional coffee shop, and the way he told the story behind it made me realize I've been selling deliverables when I should be selling the 'why' behind each choice, so now I'm asking every client for their backstory before I touch a single mockup, has anyone else flipped their pitch that way?

Honestly, the part about asking every client for their backstory before touching a mockup kind of blew my mind. That's such a simple shift, but it changes the whole conversation from "here's a pretty thing" to "here's why this matters to you." I bet your next portfolio review is going to feel way different than that kid's did.
