Got a note from a client that made me rethink my whole portfolio approach

I had a client tell me they skipped over my work three times before even clicking on it. They said my portfolio thumbnails all looked the same from a distance, like a wall of beige. I started adding more contrast in the preview images and labeling each project with a short title right on the thumbnail. After about 2 weeks of testing that change, my click-through rate from my site went up by maybe 40 percent. Has anyone else had to totally redo how they present their work based on one piece of feedback?

Oh wow, a wall of beige? That's brutal but honestly kind of hilarious in a sad way. I can't believe they admitted they skipped you three times before even looking, that's gotta sting but also be so eye opening. I mean, I guess we all get so used to our own work that we forget how it looks to a fresh pair of eyes. The thumbnail thing makes total sense though, especially if you're doing similar styles or color palettes across projects. Really makes you wonder how many other people just scrolled right past without a second look.

Man, @lilyp37 is right but is a 40% bump really worth all this fuss?
