The old operator who insisted on hand signals saved my certification today
At a site in Tulsa last week, my radio died mid-lift on a 14-ton steel beam. The rigger I work with, Dale, started waving his arms like we rehearsed, and I remembered the apprentice advice he gave me 5 years ago. He always said, "Trust the hands, not the battery." I brought that load down clean to the landing zone, and the inspector watching said it was textbook. Has anyone else kept up their hand signal fluency even when radios work fine?
