The load chart on the cab door is lying to you at elevation
Been running a 100 ton Grove up in the mountains outside Denver for a job since last Tuesday. On paper we were fine, 12,000 pounds under capacity. But my buddy who runs a rigging company in Leadville kept saying the chart is bunk above 5,000 feet. I figured he was just being dramatic. So I called the manufacturer and asked about derating. Turns out, the factory chart assumes sea level air density. At 8,000 feet, you lose about 3% of your lift capacity on a boom that long. We were actually closer to 9,000 pounds over if the wind kicked up. Had to redo the whole pick plan and bring in a bigger machine for two days. Has anyone else run into this or do you all just ignore it too?
