The load chart math that finally clicked after 20 years in the seat

Last month I was going over an old Liebherr manual from the 90s that my dad left in the shop, and I found a note he'd written in the margin about a crane size I run now. He'd scribbled something about how the chart pads out the numbers by a few percent on the low end to cover for wear and tear on the cables. I always figured those charts were dead exact, you know. Turns out the engineers build in a little slack, and that explains why a 25 ton pick never felt as tight as the math said it should. I checked it against the newer spec sheets we got from the rental outfit, and sure enough, the numbers line up with what he wrote. Made me wonder how many other things I've taken at face value over the years that have a hidden trick under them. Anyone else ever stumble on a manual quirk that changed how you read a chart?.
