Question about that anti two block alarm everyone swears by, I ran 6 months without relying on it
Back when I started on a 40 ton at a yard in Gary, an old operator named Ray kept telling me to trust the anti two block alarm over my own eyes. I nodded along but figured it was just a backup for lazy guys, so I spent about 6 months mostly ignoring it and watching my headache ball by feel instead. Then one morning in November I was booming down fast on a steel pick and the alarm screamed before I even saw the block, and I stopped maybe a foot from smacking it. Now I'm split on whether that buzzer is what actually saved me or if it was just dumb luck that it went off when it did. Did any of you run without one for years and switch, or are you still trusting your gut over the buzzer?
That line about the alarm screaming before you even saw the block hits home, I've had that exact moment where the buzzer caught what my eyes missed. Truth is our gut gets tired and distracted by hour ten, but that little box never blinks, so I stopped treating it like a crutch and started treating it like a second set of eyes. You got lucky that morning, but luck runs out, and the guys I know who ran 20 years on feel alone are the same ones with a story about the one time it almost killed them.
