Can we talk about the wind socks at the Port of Oakland
I was up on a 200 foot lattice boom last Tuesday at the Port of Oakland and noticed something odd about their wind socks. They have three of them spaced about 400 feet apart along the container row, but the middle one was reading a completely different direction than the other two. The operator on the ground was calling gusts at 18 mph but my cab anemometer was showing 26 and shifting. Turns out the middle sock sits right in the wake of a gantry crane and gets weird turbulence. I ended up waiting 40 minutes for a steadier window before making the pick. Has anyone else run into wind readings that don't match between ground and cab at a busy port?
