Hot take: the old beauty school mannequins taught me more than any newer tools
Stopped by my old beauty school in Dayton last month to drop off some supply donations. They redid the whole practice room with fancy new heads that have real hair and rotating stands. But tucked in a closet was one of the old rubber mannequins I trained on back in 2009, the kind with the painted on lashes and the hair that frizzed if you looked at it wrong. I told the instructor she should keep a couple out, because you learn tension and sectioning fast when the hair fights back. Has anyone else noticed new students struggling with basics that felt easier on the old junk?
Man those old rubber heads were no joke, we had one in our kit we nicknamed Bertha cause she'd fight you on every blow dry. I still keep mine in the garage and pull it out when I want to practice a new cut, cause if you can section that knotted mess you can section anything. The new heads feel nice but they never taught me to slow down and feel the tension like the old ones did.
