Back in my day, styling hair meant more hands-on work

We didn't have all these gadgets. Each curl was set by hand, which taught me a lot.

It's just hair, not brain surgery. Modern tools get the job done faster and still look good. All that extra manual work sounds like a hassle for no real payoff.

Skyler_jackson27 mentioning pin curls in beauty school just unlocked a core memory lol. I did hair for my high school theater club and we had to do all these vintage styles with just bobby pins and setting lotion. The director would get so mad if we used a curling iron because it never held under the stage lights like the hand-set waves did. It's a totally different result that you can't really get from a tool, even if it takes forever. That manual process forces you to learn what the hair actually does on its own.

Even back then, we had a few basic tools like rollers and clips for setting curls. The difference was that each step needed careful attention and practice. That manual process really taught you how hair behaves.

My beauty school required pin curls for every final exam. You have to respect the hair's natural flow when your hands are doing all the work, not some machine. That basic training still shapes how I approach every client today.
