Can we talk about how the best talks are the ones where nobody gives advice?
Last month my buddy Rob sat with me in his garage in Tulsa for two hours while my marriage was falling apart, and he barely said a word the whole time. I kept waiting for him to tell me what to do, but he just handed me a wrench and let me talk while we took apart his old lawn mower. I used to think real friends gave you answers, but I've started to think that's wrong. Rob never once gave me advice that night, and it did more for me than a year of people telling me what I should do. Has anyone else had a talk like that, where the silence did the work?
