Used to argue with my uncle about moon landing tapes for 3 hours, now I just hand him a printed NASA budget page
My uncle in Pittsburgh has been going on about the moon landing being fake since I was a kid, and for a long time I would get sucked into these marathon fights where neither of us moved an inch. About 8 months ago I tried something different and just printed out the actual NASA budget for 1966 showing they spent 5.9 billion on Apollo, which was like 4 percent of the whole federal budget. I handed it to him and said nothing, and weirdly he just looked at it for a minute and went quiet. Now when he brings up the shadows or the flag, I just say 'ok but why would they blow that much money faking it' and the talk dies down in like 5 minutes instead of 3 hours. It doesn't change his mind but it changes the argument. Does anyone else have a go-to document or number that shuts down a debate without turning into a shouting match?
Watched my buddy do basically the same thing with his dad over the JFK stuff. His dad had this whole thing about the government hiding everything, so my friend just started printing out old newspaper front pages from the day after, like the Dallas Morning News and stuff, and left them on the kitchen table. His dad never fully came around but the screaming matches stopped, which is honestly the real win. People don't need to admit they're wrong, they just need a way to save face and walk away. Handing someone a piece of paper does that better than any argument ever will.
