The weather satellite guy who wrecked my whole forecast approach

I used to just grab whatever radar app was free and call it good until I talked to this retired NOAA guy at a diner outside Madison last spring. He pointed at my phone and said "you're looking at a pretty picture, not data" and that stung because he was right. Turns out the free apps use smoothed models that hide the messy stuff like shear and rotation until it's too late. He showed me how to pull raw velocity scans from the public NWS feed and honestly it felt like learning a new language. Spent a solid weekend cross checking old severe weather events with those raw files and now I refuse to chase storms without checking the mesoscale discussion first. Have any other weather nerds made the jump from consumer apps to the raw government data, and did it mess with your trust in the mainstream forecasts too?

Went down that rabbit hole too, now I check raw data before trusting any TV forecast.

My buddy works at a tiny news station in Nebraska and he says the producers get the raw data at like 4am but the on-air graphics show different numbers half the time. Something about the system auto-rounding weirdly.
