My uncle in Buffalo told me to keep a spray bottle in my truck for finishing, and it actually works
My uncle has been pouring concrete for 35 years and he told me this when I was complaining about surface crusting on a 20x30 driveway in August. He said just keep a cheap spray bottle of water in the truck and mist the edges while you're waiting on the mud to set up. I tried it on a small patio pour last week and it made a huge difference, way less tearing when I ran the edger. It's such a simple thing but nobody ever showed me that in my first 3 years of finishing. Anyone else have old timer tricks that sound too simple to work but actually do?
Wouldn't misting the surface in August heat actually make crusting worse in some mixes? Every time I've seen guys spray water on a fast-drying pour it seemed like they were just chasing the problem and the real fix was getting set time right or using a retarder from the start. Glad it worked on your patio, but I'd be careful telling new guys this is a magic trick since it can bite you on a windy day.
