That time a senior tech told me my cable management was making him twitch
I used to just shove all the cables in the back of the case and call it done. Last month, a guy I was shadowing stopped mid-build and said 'you're creating a fire hazard with that rat's nest.' He made me reroute every single wire through the proper channels, zip tying them down every 3 inches. It took an extra 25 minutes but now I actually get better airflow and can swap a drive without cutting my fingers. Has anyone else had a mentor call them out on something they thought was fine?

Gotta push back here because I think people go way overboard with cable management. I mean yeah don't let wires touch hot components but honestly a few zip ties and tucking things out of the way is plenty. I've built systems where I just shoved everything behind the mobo tray and never had a single issue with airflow or heat. Those people who spend an hour routing every single cable through these tiny channels and using comb strips are wasting time that could be spent actually testing the build or gaming. And then when you need to swap a part you gotta undo all that work anyway. Pretty sure most of those "fire hazard" warnings are just gatekeeping from people who treat their PCs like art projects instead of tools.

Ignore the aesthetic angle and look at it from a maintenance standpoint. When you got cables all loose and tangled, you're way more likely to accidentally yank something loose when you're swapping a drive or reseating RAM. Keeping things tidy isn't about looks, it's about not breaking your own parts later.

That time a senior tech told me my cable management was making him twitch" hit me hard because I had the exact same wake-up call. The fire hazard part is no joke - I had a buddy who melted a SATA power cable because it was wedged against a hot GPU backplate. After I got yelled at, I started using those little cable combs and it changed everything. The airflow difference is real, especially on builds with multiple GPUs or AIO coolers. I also learned that good cable management makes troubleshooting way easier - no more guessing which cable goes where when you're swapping parts in the dark. Honestly, getting called out like that is a gift, even if it stings at the time.
