Serious question, has anyone else had a server rack just start beeping for no clear reason?
I was at a small office in Tacoma last week and their main rack started this low, steady beep. No lights on the UPS, no temp alerts on the panel, nothing. I finally traced it to a single failed fan in an old switch, but it took me 45 minutes of just listening and poking around. What's the weirdest 'phantom alarm' you've had to track down?

Ever try the old "cup to the ear" trick to find that beep?

That low beep is the worst. Had one last month that turned out to be a dying CMOS battery on an old firewall, no system alert at all. Sometimes it's a sensor that failed open on a PSU. My method now is to just start yanking power cords one at a time from the back until the noise stops, then you know which device is singing. Saves a ton of time over just listening.

Ever worry about yanking a cord causing a bigger problem, like a sudden shutdown on a critical server? That method seems fast but could introduce new issues. How do you weigh the risk versus the time saved?
