I swore my weight belt was fine at 180 feet, then a 40 minute fight with a fouled umbilical in the Gulf changed my whole pre-dive check
For two seasons I blew off the gear log my supervisor kept pushing, but after that mess cost me and the tender nearly an hour of bottom time I finally started logging every hose and belt before splash, and I want to know if anyone else had to eat humble pie before they took the checklist seriously.
The first thing I do now is run a hand down every inch of my umbilical before I even touch the helmet. Found a nick two inches from the fitting on the last job, that would have been my problem at 200 feet. Two seasons of skipping the log sounds about right for how most of us learn this stuff. My old supervisor used to say the checklists are written in other people's bad days.
