My comic shop guy said the movie did it better and I had to walk out
I was at Rocket Comics on 5th in Austin two Saturdays back when the owner, Dale, told me the Watchmen movie fixed the comic's pacing problems. I stood there holding a $12 copy of issue #4 and just stared at him. I said the whole point is the slow build and the squid, he shrugged and said nobody wants to read six pages of a pirate story. I put the book back on the shelf, told him that take was wild, and walked over to the shop two blocks down instead. Has anyone else had a shop owner trash a classic right to your face, or did I just get unlucky?
A guy at a shop in Portland once told me Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns was overrated and that the animated movie was the real version. I just about dropped my coffee. That book changed the whole industry, and he's standing there acting like it's some rough draft for a cartoon. What gets me is these guys work in comic shops, they should know better than anyone why the original matters. The pacing, the art, the stuff between the panels, that all matters and you can't just swap it out. Dale sounds like he sold out to whatever's easy to watch on a couch. Good on you for walking to the other shop, that's the right call.
